This contemporary farmhouse was built as a retirement home for a client returning to his childhood home on a family farm. The design was simplified to facilitate uncomplicated, easily manageable living. Four main structures – positioned to preserve established trees – are connected via external covered walkways. The house is all on one level, with wide doors and other features as a contingency measure for wheelchair access. The double-pitch barn typology with glazed gables creates beautiful internal volumes and allows in abundant natural light. The structure is clad in charcoal Chromadek roof sheeting in a modern application of a material common in agricultural settings. Accent walls are clad in local stone, and kiaat screens enclose a covered terrace. Large rocks and cycads from the original farmhouse, originally planted by the client’s mother, were incorporated into the landscaping. The house is entirely off-grid. In addition to the architecture and landscaping, jvr architects and interiors was also responsible for the interior design.
